This course is structured into two units:

Unit 1: Advancement Flap Techniques
This unit introduces the concept of advancement flaps and their various forms, including single advancement, A-T, H-plasty, and lateral advancements. Participants will explore how to identify loose tissue and plan an appropriate closure for defects. Clinical case examples, such as advancements on the forehead and ear, demonstrate the step-by-step process of marking, excising, and suturing using these techniques to achieve optimal cosmetic and functional outcomes.

Unit 2: Theory and Practical Examples
Unit 2 focuses on the mathematical rules applied to advancement flaps, including the one-to-one and two-to-one ratios that ensure proper blood supply to the tissue. Participants will observe practical demonstrations using models to better understand how to apply these principles. The unit also covers the importance of precise suturing techniques, including the vertical mattress method to avoid tissue inversion and enhance healing.

By the end of the course, participants will have the necessary knowledge to perform advancement flaps in various clinical settings, improving surgical results for skin cancer patients.

  1. Evaluate aspects of surgical excisions including tailoring incisions to patient surgical anatomy and skin lines.
  2. Determine the steps in the performance of advancement flaps.
  3. Plan surgical procedures including: various suturing techniques, elliptical excisions, rotation flaps, rhomboidal flaps, advancement flaps and full thickness grafts.
  4. Judge when to refer patients to others.

All degree qualified medical practitioners.
