The Ageing, Medication, and Nutritional Management course consists of two detailed units that cover critical aspects of nutrition and medication management in older adults.

Unit 1: Concepts of Ageing, Medication, and Nutrition
This unit explores the physiological changes that occur with ageing and their effects on nutrient absorption and metabolism. Participants will learn about normal versus pathological ageing, the role of polypharmacy in exacerbating nutritional deficiencies, and the key vitamins and minerals affected by these processes. It also discusses the risks of nutrient depletion and the need for dietary guidelines, particularly for older patients on multiple medications. The unit emphasises the importance of identifying nutrient deficiencies and suggests strategies for managing the nutritional needs of elderly patients.

Unit 2: Case Studies in Ageing and Nutritional Management
The second unit features two in-depth case studies that illustrate the practical challenges of managing elderly patients with complex medical histories and multiple medications. The first case, William, involves an 82-year-old with polypharmacy and nutritional deficiencies, focusing on medication-induced nutrient depletion and the impact on his health. The second case, Irene, addresses the relationship between medication, malnutrition, and fall risk in an 89-year-old woman. Through these case studies, participants will learn to apply the concepts of nutritional management in real-world clinical settings.

This course equips healthcare professionals with the knowledge and tools to improve nutritional care for older patients, enhancing their overall health and wellbeing.

  1. Assess nutritional risks and associated symptoms in the elderly and develop an approach to assess and manage nutrient needs of individual older patients on polypharmacy.
