This course is divided into two comprehensive units, each focused on specific aspects of skin cancer management techniques:

Unit 1: Biopsy Techniques and Haemostasis
This unit provides an in-depth understanding of essential tools and methods for skin cancer biopsy:
- Cautery Modes: Learn the differences between monopolar and bipolar cautery, including their respective applications, benefits, and precautions to ensure patient safety, particularly in those with implanted devices.
- Punch Biopsy: Master the step-by-step process of performing punch biopsies, including optimal sizes for accurate pathology, techniques for haemostasis, and the use of Marini sutures for precise closure in small defects.
- Shave Biopsy and Excision: Understand the advantages of shave biopsies over punch biopsies, particularly in cosmetically sensitive areas. Explore techniques to adjust depth and achieve pinpoint bleeding for accurate diagnostic samples or complete lesion excision.

Unit 2: Halo Grafting and Advanced Techniques
This unit focuses on advanced dermatological procedures, with a special emphasis on halo grafting:
- Shave Biopsy and Grafting: Transition from simple biopsies to performing partial-thickness skin grafts using the innovative halo grafting technique. Learn the mathematical principles behind graft sizing and its practical application for lower limb and scalp defects.
- Grafting Phases: Explore the three key phases of graft healing—plasmatic imbibition, inosculation, and neovascularization—and their clinical implications.
- Aftercare and Dressing Protocols: Gain insights into postoperative care, including the use of multi-layer dressings to protect grafts and promote optimal healing, as well as patient education to prevent complications.
- Clinical Demonstrations: Watch step-by-step videos showcasing real-life examples of biopsy and grafting procedures on clinical and simulated models, including pigskin.

This course combines theoretical foundations with practical expertise, equipping participants with the skills and confidence to handle a range of dermatological procedures.   1. Plan how to conduct safe incisions and maintain haemostasis while performing minor procedures including biopsies, grafts and excisions. 
  2. Establish the necessary steps to perform safe curettage and cautery on low-risk small lesions.

Dr Colin Armstrong

This course is presented by Dr Colin Armstrong: BSc, BMBS, MMed (Skin Cancer), FRACGP.

He is a general practitioner and part-time clinical trials investigator at the Wesley Research Institute, Brisbane. He completed all HealthCert certificate courses and The University of Queensland Master of Medicine (Skin Cancer) in 2011. Working primarily in skin cancer since 2010, Colin is passionate about building GPs’ confidence in their management of skin cancer and has an ongoing commitment to GP education in all facets of skin cancer diagnosis and treatment.
