Dermoscopy for melanoma

Dermoscopy for melanoma

The "Dermoscopy for Melanoma" course offers healthcare professionals a comprehensive guide to identifying and managing melanoma through dermoscopy. Participants will learn to recognize melanoma-specific structures, improve diagnostic accuracy, and understand dermoscopic patterns associated with melanoma. This evidence-based course covers ten critical melanoma-specific structures, aiding in the detection of early-stage melanoma. With practical case studies and dermoscopic images, learners will enhance their skills in diagnosing suspicious lesions and applying effective management strategies in clinical settings.

The Dermoscopy for Melanoma course is divided into one detailed unit, focusing on the dermoscopic features and patterns that aid in diagnosing melanoma.

Melanoma Specific Structures
This unit covers the identification of melanoma-specific structures seen on non-glabrous skin. Participants will learn to detect features such as atypical networks, angulated lines, negative networks, shiny white lines, and peripheral tan structuralist areas. Each structure is explored in detail, with an explanation of its dermoscopic appearance and clinical significance. The course discusses how these structures can be used to differentiate melanoma from benign lesions, with special attention to invasive melanomas. The unit includes numerous dermoscopic images and practical tips on assessing lesion patterns and determining appropriate management.

This course equips medical professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to diagnose melanoma with increased confidence, using advanced dermoscopic techniques and tools.

  1. Distinguish the features of melanocytic naevi.
  2. Detect melanocytic naevi and carry out appropriate action.
  3. Judge dermoscopic patterns of melanoma.
  4. Detect and diagnose dermoscopic structures for naevi or melanoma.
  5. Detect clues and evaluate melanoma in situ, solar lentigo, lichen planus-like keratosis, pigmented actinic keratosis.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Professor Ashfaq A. Marghoob

This course is presented by Professor Ashfaq A. Marghoob: MD.

He is a board-certified dermatologist specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of cancers of the skin. He is the director of Memorial Sloan Kettering’s regional skin cancer clinic in Long Island and consults and treats patients in the centre’s outpatient facility in Hauppauge. Although providing the best care possible for his patients remains his primary goal, Ashfaq also remains committed to education and clinical research, with the hope of educating clinicians and the public about the importance of early skin cancer detection. He is active in clinical research and has published numerous papers on topics related to skin cancer with an emphasis on melanoma, atypical/dysplastic nevi, and congenital melanocytic nevi. Ashfaq’s research interests are focused on the use of imaging instruments such as photography, dermoscopy, and confocal laser microscopy to recognize skin cancer early in its development.
