The "Laser Use: Pigment, Melasma, and Resurfacing" course offers a comprehensive guide to the application of lasers in dermatological and cosmetic medicine. Presented by Dr. Anthony Rixon, an experienced practitioner in skin and cosmetic medicine, this course provides in-depth training in laser technology to address pigmentation issues, melasma, and skin rejuvenation.

The course begins with Unit 1, which explores the foundational concepts of pigmentation and melasma. It delves into the genetic and environmental factors contributing to pigment disorders, explaining the mechanisms of melanin production and its role in skin protection and pigmentation. This unit highlights common conditions such as freckles, lentigines, and melasma, offering detailed explanations of their presentation and the challenges they pose in treatment. Participants will also learn about the importance of distinguishing between superficial and deep pigmentation to tailor laser treatments effectively.

Unit 2 focuses on the principles of laser technology, detailing the physics behind various laser wavelengths, penetration depths, and energy settings. Participants will gain knowledge about different laser modalities, including non-ablative and ablative lasers, their mechanisms, and their applications in treating pigmentation, scars, and skin texture issues. This unit emphasises the importance of customising laser settings to match patient needs while minimising side effects and optimising results. It also introduces fractional laser technology, which combines efficacy with reduced recovery time.
In Unit 3, the course covers the critical aspects of pre-treatment preparation, anaesthesia, and post-treatment care. Participants will learn about the importance of conditioning the skin before procedures to enhance outcomes and speed recovery. Anaesthesia techniques, including topical applications and nerve blocks, are explained to ensure patient comfort during laser treatments. This unit also provides detailed guidance on post-treatment care, including managing erythema, minimising complications, and ensuring effective healing through proper moisturisation and light therapy.

Through real-world examples and clinical insights, the course provides a practical framework for integrating laser technology into cosmetic and dermatological practices. Participants will learn to evaluate patients, plan treatments, and navigate the complexities of laser resurfacing with confidence. This program is essential for practitioners aiming to expand their expertise in aesthetic medicine and deliver superior care to their patients.
