The "Lip Wedges" course provides an in-depth understanding of lip anatomy and advanced surgical techniques for repairing lip defects. Divided into two detailed units, the course combines theoretical knowledge with practical demonstrations for a comprehensive learning experience.

Unit 1: Lip Wedges – Theory and Techniques
This unit introduces the unique anatomy of the lips, emphasising the blood supply, nerve innervation, and structural layers crucial for surgical planning. It covers fundamental principles, including accurate tissue alignment, prevention of microstomia, and maintaining vascular integrity. Participants learn about full-thickness wedge excisions, W-plasty modifications, and advanced reconstructive techniques such as the Abbe lip switch and Estlander flaps. Through detailed descriptions and schematic illustrations, the unit ensures mastery of essential concepts for successful surgeries.

Unit 2: Practical Demonstration: Lip Wedge Excision on Pork
Bringing theory to life, this unit demonstrates lip wedge excision using a pork model. Step-by-step guidance is provided for marking the vermilion border, executing precise incisions, managing the labial artery, and suturing muscle, dermis, and skin layers. Techniques for achieving optimal symmetry and minimising scarring are highlighted. Participants gain practical insights into managing challenges and ensuring a seamless, aesthetically pleasing closure.

Through expert-led instruction, case studies, and assessments, this course enables practitioners to refine their surgical expertise and confidently address a wide range of lip defects.

  1. Distinguish anatomy of the nose, lip, eyelid, ear and lower limb.
  2. Establish the need for careful surgery techniques with the nose, lip, eyelid, ear and lower limb.
  3. Determine the correct surgical steps to repair lip defects with flap and wedge excisions.
  4. Decide when to refer patients to others.
