The "Medicinal Cannabis - PTSD: Treatment in Clinical Practice" course offers an in-depth understanding of PTSD and its treatment with medicinal cannabis. Led by experienced clinician Dr. John Tay, this program provides the tools and knowledge required to incorporate cannabinoid therapies into PTSD management effectively.

Unit 1 introduces PTSD, covering its symptoms, diagnostic criteria, and underlying neurobiology. Participants learn how traumatic events trigger physiological responses, including hypervigilance, avoidance, emotional dysregulation, and memory alterations. The unit establishes a foundation for understanding the role of the endocannabinoid system in PTSD and its potential therapeutic implications.

Unit 2 focuses on treatment approaches, comparing conventional options such as SSRIs, antipsychotics, and psychotherapy with medicinal cannabis therapies. The unit explains how cannabinoids like CBD and THC interact with the endocannabinoid system to reduce anxiety, regulate emotions, and facilitate fear extinction. Detailed dosing strategies for oral, sublingual, and inhaled cannabis are provided, emphasising personalised care.

Unit 3 explores the regulatory landscape for medicinal cannabis in PTSD treatment, particularly in Australia. It discusses the policies of the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) and offers guidance on securing funding for veterans with chronic pain or PTSD-related symptoms. Participants learn to navigate legal and bureaucratic processes to support their patients.

Unit 4 uses case studies to illustrate the practical application of cannabinoid therapies. Two detailed cases highlight tailored treatment plans for veterans with PTSD, demonstrating how individualised dosing and cannabinoid selection can address symptoms like anxiety, hypervigilance, insomnia, and pain. These real-world examples underscore the importance of titrating treatments to patient needs while considering co-morbidities and prior cannabis use.

This course equips healthcare professionals with the knowledge to integrate medicinal cannabis into PTSD treatment safely and effectively, ensuring improved patient outcomes and advancing clinical practice in this evolving field.
