This course is structured into one comprehensive unit that covers three key menstrual irregularities:

Heavy Menstrual Bleeding: Participants will explore the PALM-COEIN classification, which helps diagnose causes of abnormal uterine bleeding, from polyps and adenomyosis to coagulopathies and iatrogenic factors. Management strategies include pharmaceutical options like NSAIDs and hormonal therapies​.

Dysmenorrhea: This section distinguishes between primary and secondary dysmenorrhea. Primary dysmenorrhea is managed with NSAIDs and hormonal contraceptives, while secondary dysmenorrhea may indicate underlying conditions like endometriosis.

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD): Participants will learn diagnostic criteria and treatment options for PMDD, including SSRIs, hormonal treatments, and lifestyle changes​.

This course provides essential knowledge for healthcare professionals to effectively diagnose and treat menstrual disorders in clinical practice.

  1. Diagnose common menstrual problems of menorrhagia, dysmenorrhoea and dysfunctional uterine bleeding.
  2. Determine the management options for menstrual problems and consider individual patient factors in formulating a management plan.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Dr Sharon Sykes

This course is presented by Dr Sharon Sykes.

Dr Sykes works in private general practice in Port Macquarie, Australia where she is also a supervisor of GP registrars and of medical students. Dr Sykes served 18 years in the Royal Australian Air Force before becoming a general practitioner. She has a special interest in medical education and haspreviously worked as a medical educator for North Coast GP Training. Dr Sykes holds a MBBS, Bachelor of Applied Science (Med Lab Sci) and a Fellowship of the RACGP.
