Nutrition in chronic kidney disease

"Nutrition in Chronic Kidney Disease" is an in-depth course designed to provide healthcare professionals with comprehensive knowledge on dietary management for patients with chronic and end-stage kidney disease (CKD). The course explores essential nutritional strategies to manage comorbidities like cardiovascular disease and diabetes while addressing issues such as protein energy wasting, electrolyte imbalances, and kidney stones. Through evidence-based guidance, this course equips professionals with the tools to tailor nutritional interventions for kidney disease patients at various stages.

The Nutrition in Chronic Kidney Disease course, presented by Dr. Jaimon Kelly, delves into the complexities of dietary management in patients with chronic kidney disease. This course is divided into two key units:

Unit 1: Nutritional Management in Early CKD (Stages 1-5)
This unit provides an overview of the key nutritional considerations for managing chronic kidney disease in its earlier stages (1-5). The topics include:
Chronic Disease Management: Participants will explore how nutrition plays a critical role in controlling cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity in CKD patients. The unit covers recommendations for protein intake (controlled to avoid excess), low-sodium diets, and overall healthy eating patterns to slow CKD progression.
Protein and Salt Management: Special emphasis is placed on balancing protein intake to prevent further kidney damage while addressing issues like sodium control for hypertension and cardiovascular health.
Comorbidity Management: Strategies for managing risk factors, such as high blood pressure and insulin resistance, are covered, alongside the importance of weight management and controlling blood sugar levels.

Unit 2: Managing Advanced CKD and Renal-Specific Issues
The second unit focuses on the specific nutritional challenges that arise as CKD progresses to more advanced stages:
Kidney Stones and Electrolyte Imbalances: This section explores dietary interventions to prevent kidney stones, manage high levels of potassium and phosphate, and maintain fluid balance. Participants will learn about dietary changes for patients experiencing these complications and how to adjust intake of key nutrients like sodium and phosphorus.
Malnutrition and Protein Energy Wasting: The course addresses the risk of malnutrition, especially in dialysis patients, with a focus on screening tools and interventions to prevent or manage protein-energy wasting (PEW).
Case Management: Practical case studies are used to illustrate nutritional strategies for patients experiencing malnutrition or electrolyte imbalances, helping participants apply evidence-based interventions in their practice.

This course equips healthcare professionals with the knowledge to create personalized nutrition plans for CKD patients, aiming to improve patient outcomes and slow disease progression.

  1. Determine key nutrition issues in patients with chronic kidney disease and differentiate nutrient and diet quality recommendations with regard to practicality for the kidney patient.
