Rare Nail Disorders and Cicatricial Alopecia is an advanced dermatology course that focuses on diagnosing and managing rare nail diseases and scarring alopecia. The course comprises two detailed units, each presented by Dr. Zoe Apalla, an expert in dermatology with extensive clinical and research experience.

Unit 1: Rare Nail Disorders
This unit explores the anatomy of the nail apparatus to establish a foundation for understanding nail diseases. Learners are introduced to various nail conditions, including:
- Structural abnormalities: Beau's lines, pitting, onycholysis, and koilonychia.
- Infections and inflammatory conditions: Fungal infections, bacterial paronychia, and psoriasis.
- Rare presentations: Longitudinal melanonychia, onychogryphosis, and subungual tumors.
Each condition is discussed with its etiology, clinical presentation, and management strategies. High-resolution dermoscopic images enhance comprehension, and case discussions facilitate practical application.

Unit 2: Cicatricial Alopecia
This unit focuses on hair loss disorders, dividing them into scarring (cicatricial) and non-scarring categories. Key topics include:
- Non-scarring alopecia: Androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, and tinea capitis.
- Scarring alopecia: Chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus, lichen planopilaris, frontal fibrosing alopecia, and folliculitis decalvans.
The unit highlights diagnostic techniques such as dermoscopy and histological examination, providing guidance on treatment plans that may include steroids, immunomodulators, and supportive care. Practical management tips and visuals of clinical cases ensure real-world applicability.

With interactive assessments and case discussions, this course equips practitioners to address complex dermatological conditions effectively, improving patient outcomes.

  1. Diagnose and appropriately manage patients with hair loss, including cicatricialalopecia.
  2. Diagnose and appropriately manage patients with nail diseases, including those less commonly seen in general practice.
  3. Distinguish and evaluate difficult and rare dermatological diseases.
