This five-unit course offers practical guidance for addressing diverse patient needs, improving reproductive health outcomes, and staying informed on the latest advancements.
Unit 1: Phases of the Menstrual Cycle
This foundational unit revisits the intricacies of the menstrual cycle to build a base for understanding natural family planning. Topics include:
- Menstruation, follicular, ovulatory, and luteal phases.
- Hormonal regulation and implications for fertility.
- Timing and physiological markers critical for family planning discussions.
Unit 2: Natural Family Planning (NFP)
Focuses on fertility awareness-based methods as alternatives to hormonal contraception:
- Symptom-based methods (e.g., temperature, mucus, and cervical changes) and calendar-based methods.
- Advantages, disadvantages, and contraindications of NFP.

Dr Nelum Dharmapriya
This course is presented by Dr Nelum Dharmapriya.
Nelum is a dedicated GP with a passion for making a difference in the lives of her patients and GP colleagues. With years of experience and a commitment to holistic care, she strives to integrate medical knowledge with personalised approaches to enhance overall well-being.Nelum embarked on her medical journey at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, where she obtained her medical degree in 1995. Following her graduation, she built a successful medical career in General Practice in the United Kingdom before making the life-changing decision to relocate to Brisbane with her family in 2009. In 2012, Nelum realised a lifelong dream of establishing Narangba Doctors—a thriving medical centre that has grown to include 10 GPs and has earned an excellent reputation for comprehensive and compassionate care.
Nelum is currently working as a GP at Narangba Doctors, Queensland. She had a Diploma of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, UK (DRCOG), Diploma of Family Planning and Sexual Health Medicine, UK (DFFP) and has obtained Letter of Competence in Intrauterine Techniques by FFPRHC, UK.
