Challenging general dermatology cases

The Challenging General Dermatology Cases course is structured into two units, offering a case-based learning approach to address rare and difficult dermatological conditions.

Unit 1: Cases 1 to 4
This unit covers the following conditions with comprehensive insights into their clinical presentations, diagnostic steps, and management options:
1. Hidradenitis Suppurativa: Explore diagnosis and treatment strategies for this recurrent inflammatory skin disease. Topics include topical therapies, systemic antibiotics, surgical options, and contraindicated treatments for patients planning pregnancy.
2. Dermatomyositis: Learn to recognise cutaneous signs like Gottron's papules and the heliotrope rash. The unit also covers systemic manifestations, malignancy associations, and long-term immunosuppressive management.
3. Discoid Lupus Erythematosus: Examine scarring plaques and alopecia with a focus on avoiding triggers and employing therapies like hydroxychloroquine and intralesional steroids.
4. Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN): Understand the acute management of these life-threatening conditions, including drug withdrawal, supportive care, and follow-up for long-term complications like xerostomia and scarring.

Unit 2: Cases 5 to 9
This unit continues with five additional challenging cases:
5. Lichen Planus: Study its association with autoimmune conditions and management using immunomodulators, phototherapy, and corticosteroids.
6. Systemic Sclerosis (CREST Syndrome): Investigate presentations like sclerodactyly, Raynaud’s phenomenon, and calcinosis. Management focuses on symptom relief and systemic involvement monitoring.
7. Granuloma Annulare: Review this benign condition’s differential diagnosis and treatment options ranging from topical therapies to systemic agents.
8. Cutaneous B-Cell Lymphoma: Learn to differentiate between primary and metastatic lesions and manage with excision or localized radiotherapy.
9. Leishmaniasis: Examine the diagnosis and treatment of this parasitic infection, including the use of intralesional therapies and systemic management to minimise scarring and systemic spread.
