The Closing the Wound course offers a comprehensive guide to effective wound closure techniques, designed for healthcare professionals seeking to enhance their procedural skills. Divided into two detailed units, this course provides practical knowledge and demonstrations to ensure participants gain confidence and proficiency in wound management.
Unit 1: Knot Tying and Suture Theory
Begin with the essentials of wound closure, focusing on selecting the appropriate closure method—staples, glues, tapes, or sutures—for different clinical situations. Key topics include:
- Suture Material Selection: Understanding absorbable vs. non-absorbable sutures, suture sizes, and needle types.
- Wound Healing Principles: Techniques for proper tension distribution, wound edge eversion, and avoiding complications such as hematomas or stitch marks.
- Knot Tying Techniques: Practice essential skills such as square knots and learn their importance in achieving secure closures. This unit lays the groundwork for surgical precision and prepares participants for hands-on suturing techniques.
Unit 2: Suturing Techniques
Building on the foundation of Unit 1, this unit dives into advanced suturing methods, including:
- Simple Interrupted Sutures: Master the most commonly used technique for wound closure.
- Vertical and Horizontal Mattress Sutures: Learn when to use these techniques for wounds requiring added tension support or when addressing challenging anatomical areas.
- Subcuticular Sutures: Explore this cosmetic approach to minimise visible scarring, ideal for facial or aesthetic closures.
- Buried Dermal Sutures: Understand their role in reducing tension and supporting wound healing from deeper layers. The unit includes practical demonstrations, detailed diagrams, and step-by-step instructions to ensure participants can confidently apply these techniques in their clinical practice.
This course is designed to help healthcare professionals refine their wound management skills, ensuring improved patient outcomes and satisfaction. From selecting the right materials to mastering advanced techniques, participants will leave equipped to handle a wide variety of wound closure challenges with confidence.
- Determine the steps for effective wound closure, dressing selection and wound complications.
- Evaluate aseptic technique and its related considerations.
- Evaluate practical wound management.
- Distinguish anatomy related to skin suturing and evaluate safe suturing of buried dermal sutures and continuous subcuticular sutures.
- Structure the steps for suturing including simple interrupted suture, buried dermal sutures and continuous subcuticular suture.
- Structure the steps for the mattress stitch – horizontal and vertical.
- Determine and plan the treatment of warts, skin lesions, haematomas and anorectal conditions in a simulated setting.
- Evaluate the importance of complete patient assessment, diagnosis, informed consent, local anaesthetics, equipment, consumables, step by step procedural instructions, post-operative care, dressings and management of complications.
