The Depression in Men course is structured into four engaging units, each targeting critical aspects of male mental health care:

Unit 1: Feelings, Emotions, and Depression
This unit explores the societal and cultural barriers that prevent men from expressing emotions, increasing the risk of undiagnosed depression. Participants learn to initiate sensitive conversations, recognise atypical depression symptoms, and address stigma to foster open communication. Key factors influencing male mental health, such as chronic illnesses and societal expectations, are thoroughly discussed.

Unit 2: Depression Assessment and Screening
In this unit, practitioners are introduced to screening tools and diagnostic criteria, including the use of DSM-V guidelines and assessments like PHQ-9. Emphasis is placed on evaluating suicide risks, identifying comorbidities, and understanding the role of substance use and family history. Practical approaches for thorough patient history taking and immediate interventions for high-risk patients are covered.

Unit 3: Management and Treatment Strategies
Participants explore evidence-based treatment options, including SSRIs, psychotherapy, and lifestyle interventions such as exercise and sleep hygiene. Advanced techniques like transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) are discussed for refractory cases. The importance of shared decision-making, addressing medication adherence, and tailoring treatments to individual needs are central themes.

Unit 4: Patient Compliance, Guidelines, and Referrals
This unit focuses on maintaining long-term treatment success. Strategies for monitoring progress using tools like PHQ-9, addressing barriers to compliance, and fostering team-based care are emphasised. Guidelines for frequent follow-ups and timely referrals to specialists for complex cases are provided. The unit highlights the importance of patient and family education in achieving remission and preventing relapse.

This course offers a robust framework for addressing the complex interplay between mental health, physical well-being, and societal factors in men, enabling healthcare providers to make a meaningful impact in their patients’ lives.

  1. Apply techniques to open discussion about sensitive topics, such as feelings, emotions and depression with male patients.
