The "Fitness and Exercise in Older Men" course is divided into four key units, each covering a critical aspect of exercise and health management for older men.
Unit 1: Ageing and Risk Factors
This unit introduces the physiological effects of ageing in men, focusing on reduced physical capacity and the prevalence of chronic diseases. It provides a detailed analysis of common health risks in older men, including heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Participants will explore the importance of maintaining physical fitness to mitigate these risks.
Unit 2: Overcoming Barriers to Physical Activity
This unit discusses the various barriers older men face in engaging with physical activity, such as social, logistical, and psychological factors. The unit also offers strategies for overcoming these barriers, including the role of flexible GP hours, male-focused health clinics, and social support systems. Practical solutions for encouraging older men to incorporate exercise into their daily lives are also covered.
Unit 3: Benefits and Effects of Fitness
In this unit, the numerous benefits of fitness and exercise for older men are explored in depth. Participants will learn how regular physical activity reduces the risk of chronic diseases, improves mental health, and enhances longevity. The unit includes research-based evidence showing the positive effects of aerobic fitness, strength training, and the role of physical activity in cancer and dementia prevention.
Unit 4: The GP’s Role in Promoting Exercise
The final unit focuses on the crucial role of general practitioners in promoting exercise as medicine. Participants will be introduced to the ""Exercise is Medicine"" model, learning how to assess patients’ fitness levels, prescribe exercise regimens, and provide ongoing support. This unit emphasises the importance of GPs in guiding older men through the stages of behavior change to ensure long-term physical activity engagement.
This course equips healthcare professionals with the tools and knowledge to improve the health and fitness of older men, offering practical strategies for integrating exercise into patient care.
