The course is divided into five units, each addressing specific musculoskeletal conditions and sports injuries encountered in general practice:
Unit 1: Plantar Fasciitis and Chronic Ankle Instability
This unit covers the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for plantar fasciitis, one of the most common causes of heel pain. It also addresses chronic ankle instability, focusing on recurrent ligament sprains and proprioception deficits. Participants will learn management techniques including stretching, relative rest, and rehabilitation exercises to restore stability and function.
Unit 2: Achilles Tendinopathy and Shin Splints
In Unit 2, participants explore the management of Achilles tendinopathy, including the biomechanics involved in tendon injuries and the importance of progressive loading in rehabilitation. The unit also covers shin splints, examining their etiology, diagnosis, and conservative treatment approaches. This module emphasises managing overuse injuries and the importance of early intervention.
Unit 3: Patellar Tendinopathy, Osgood-Schlatter’s Disease, and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
This unit discusses patellar tendinopathy, often seen in athletes, and provides insights into rehabilitation strategies for knee injuries. It also covers Osgood-Schlatter’s disease, a condition affecting young athletes, and carpal tunnel syndrome, focusing on non-surgical and surgical options for nerve entrapment. This unit emphasises the importance of proper diagnosis and individualised treatment plans.
Unit 4: Ilio-tibial Band Friction Syndrome and Rotator Cuff Tendinitis
Unit 4 focuses on two common overuse injuries: ilio-tibial band friction syndrome, a frequent complaint in runners, and rotator cuff tendinitis, often seen in athletes and individuals engaging in repetitive overhead movements. Participants will learn the role of physiotherapy, stretching, and strengthening exercises in managing these conditions, as well as surgical options for chronic cases.
Unit 5: Epicondylitis (Elbow) and Lumbar Facet Joint Syndrome
The final unit addresses tennis and golfer’s elbow (epicondylitis), outlining conservative treatments such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), physiotherapy, and corticosteroid injections. It also covers lumbar facet joint syndrome, a common cause of lower back pain, with a focus on diagnosis, non-surgical treatments, and rehabilitation exercises.
This course equips participants with the knowledge and tools to confidently manage and prevent recurrent musculoskeletal injuries in their patients, ensuring better long-term outcomes.
