This course is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of local anaesthesia in the context of skin cancer medicine. It consists of one in-depth unit covering the following key topics:

Pharmacology of Local Anaesthetics
The course begins with a detailed review of the two main classes of local anaesthetics—amides (such as lignocaine) and esters. Participants will learn about the mechanism of action, duration, and optimal usage of these agents, focusing on commonly used drugs like lignocaine and bupivacaine. Additionally, the session covers the use of adrenaline in anaesthesia to enhance efficacy and safety.

Techniques of Local Infiltration and Nerve Blocks
This section discusses various injection techniques, including local field infiltration and nerve blocks. Participants will learn the best practices for minimizing patient discomfort, such as adjusting the pH of anaesthetics with sodium bicarbonate. The course also provides a step-by-step guide on administering nerve blocks for areas like the lips, nose, and extremities, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of when and how to use nerve blocks effectively.

Anatomy and Safety Considerations in High-Risk Areas ("Tiger Country")
Special attention is given to "Tiger Country" areas, such as the head, neck, and hands, where the risk of nerve damage is high. The course highlights critical anatomical structures, such as the facial nerve and common peroneal nerve, and provides strategies to avoid complications during procedures in these sensitive regions.

Practical Application and Safety Tips
The course offers practical demonstrations, including videos showing how to safely administer local anaesthetic, avoid common mistakes, and manage potential complications. Participants will learn safe dosing guidelines, tips for preventing patient injury, and advice on handling nerve damage or anaesthetic reactions.

This course is essential for healthcare professionals involved in skin cancer procedures, providing a solid foundation for safe, effective anaesthesia administration in clinical practice.

  1. Classify suture materials and evaluate their application to closure techniques.
  2. Distinguish anatomy of the head, neck, torso, upper limb and lower limb.
