Unit 1: Epidemiology, Anatomy, and Aetiology
This foundational unit explores the structure and vulnerability of the cervical spine, emphasising its critical role in supporting vital functions. Learn to identify the three anatomical zones of the neck and understand the types of injuries common in sports, including blunt trauma, axial loading, and hyperextension injuries. The session provides insights into mechanisms of injury in various sports and highlights the importance of early diagnosis to prevent long-term neurological damage.

Unit 2: Clinical History and Examination
Gain proficiency in systematic assessment of neck injuries. This unit emphasises the importance of a thorough history and physical examination, including recognising red flags like midline tenderness, neurological deficits, and signs of neurogenic shock. You'll learn to apply guidelines like the Canadian C-Spine Rules and the NEXUS criteria for deciding when imaging is necessary. The unit also covers advanced neurological tests and their relevance to cervical spine injuries, ensuring accurate diagnosis and timely intervention.

Unit 3: Management Guidelines
This unit provides a comprehensive guide to managing neck injuries in both emergency and routine clinical settings. Key topics include spinal immobilization with soft collars, emergency airway and circulation protocols, and the role of imaging modalities like CT and MRI in treatment planning. Special focus is given to managing injuries in children, patients with arthritic or aging spines, and those presenting with soft tissue or blunt trauma. Learn about pharmacological options, rehabilitation strategies, and the psychosocial impact of chronic neck injuries.

This course empowers healthcare professionals to manage sport-related neck injuries confidently, ensuring optimal outcomes for athletes while minimising the risk of complications.

  1. Plan the initial diagnosis and GP management of neck injuries in sport, particularly to assess and minimise risk of cervical spinal cord or nerve root damage.
  2. Judge when to refer patients with neck injuries and the role of the GP in subsequent patient care.
