The diagnosis of skin rashes PDSA

This Practice Improvement (PDSA) activity is a self-directed activity designed to support reflective learning and continuous improvement in clinical practice. Participants identify an area for improvement, implement a structured change using the Plan Do Study Act (PDSA) framework, and evaluate the outcomes over one or more cycles. Keep a record of time spent and outcomes achieved to support self-submission for outcome measurement hours.

This PDSA tool originated in change management and is now used by GPs in their clinical practice. Any proposed change should follow the PDSA pattern:

  1. Develop a plan (Plan the change)
  2. Carry out that plan (Do the change)
  3. Observe and learn from what happened (Study the effects of the change and learn)
  4. Decide what modifications should be made (Act on those findings to modify, if needed)

then repeat all of the above again – develop a new plan based on what you learned from the first cycle, carry it out, observe and learn, act on findings etc. It is common to break down the change into smaller parts (called cycles) and have at least three cycles of the above steps before finalizing a change.

It is important to set goals that are measurable for each cycle (e.g. increase by 50%, meet once a month, record two patients) in order to be able to measure if you are successful in meeting your goals.
