This course is divided into two units:

Unit 1: The Gut Microbiome – Part A
In this unit, participants explore the functions of the gut microbiota, including its role in immune regulation, metabolism, and communication with the nervous system. The unit discusses the factors that affect the composition of the gut microbiota, such as diet, medications, and age. Key insights are provided into how the gut microbiota contributes to health and disease, with a focus on maintaining a balanced microbiome for overall well-being​.

Unit 2: The Gut Microbiome – Part B
The second unit delves into the practical application of prebiotics and probiotics for the management of IBS and functional constipation. The unit explains the mechanisms by which these supplements work, including their influence on the gut microbiota and their interactions with the immune and nervous systems. Evidence-based guidelines for the appropriate use of specific strains in clinical practice are provided, along with insights into their effectiveness in symptom management​.

This course equips healthcare professionals with the knowledge and tools to incorporate prebiotics and probiotics into treatment plans, enhancing patient care in managing gut-related conditions.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Dr Eirini Dimidi

This course is presented by Dr Eirini Dimidi.

Dr Dimidi is a nutritionist and registered dietitian since 2011. She has been awarded a PhD from King’s College London where she investigated the symptomatic, physiological and microbiological effect of probiotics in people with constipation. In 2016, she was appointed as a Research Associate at the Department of Nutritional Sciences, King’s College London, where she is undertaking several research projects on the impact of nutritional interventions (fibre, probiotics, prebiotics, low FODMAP diet) in people with functional bowel disorders.
