This course explores the critical role of vitamins and minerals in maintaining health and preventing disease, with a focus on understanding when supplementation is necessary. It provides evidence-based guidance on micronutrient supplements, their impact on chronic disease, and how to manage deficiencies and toxicities in clinical practice. Presented by Dr. Kate Morgan, a dietitian and academic, the course covers the following key topics:

Overview of Vitamins and Minerals
This section revisits the classification of micronutrients, distinguishing between macronutrients, vitamins, and minerals. It discusses the essential nature of micronutrients, their functions in the body, and common deficiencies and toxicities. Vitamins are categorized as water-soluble or fat-soluble, while minerals are classified as major or trace minerals.

The Role of Supplements
This segment focuses on the context of micronutrient supplementation in Australia, where dietary supplements are widely used. The course discusses when supplements may be indicated, such as for older adults at risk of osteoporosis, pregnant women, and those with specific medical conditions or dietary restrictions.

Case Studies: Osteoporosis and Pregnancy
Through practical case studies, this section examines the role of supplements in managing conditions like osteoporosis and pregnancy. It provides guidelines on when calcium, vitamin D, iron, folate, and other micronutrients are necessary, based on clinical evidence.

Micronutrient Myths and Claims
This section debunks common myths around supplements, such as whether vitamin C can prevent the common cold or if multivitamins promote longevity. It reviews the scientific evidence on these claims and offers practical advice for managing patient expectations.

Considerations for Future Practice
The course concludes by discussing the evolving science of nutrition and the importance of staying updated with the latest research. It also covers regulatory changes in testing for micronutrient levels and how these may impact clinical practice.

This course is ideal for healthcare professionals looking to expand their knowledge of micronutrients, understand when supplements are needed, and effectively manage patient care through nutrition and supplementation.

  1. Decide how micronutrient deficiencies or toxicities alter normal body functions and how micronutrient supplementation impacts on chronic disease outcomes.
  2. Differentiate the symptoms of micronutrient deficiencies and toxicities in order to diagnose and plan treatment.
