Unit 1: What is Obesity? This unit introduces obesity as a medical condition, highlighting its definition, prevalence, and health impacts. Participants learn the role of Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist circumference in diagnosis, as well as the epidemiological trends driving the obesity epidemic.

Unit 2: Primary Prevention The focus shifts to preventive strategies, including the practitioner’s role in patient education and advocacy for community health programs. It explores the genetic, environmental, and epigenetic factors contributing to obesity and provides insights into reducing risk factors through early intervention.

Unit 3: Screening and Evaluation This unit details the screening process, emphasising non-judgmental communication and comprehensive evaluations. It covers history-taking, physical examinations, and diagnostic investigations, ensuring a holistic understanding of obesity’s root causes and related comorbidities.

Unit 4: Management Participants learn to craft individualised management plans focusing on lifestyle changes, psychological support, and realistic goal-setting. The unit also explores advanced interventions, such as pharmacological therapies and bariatric surgery, offering guidance on patient selection and follow-up for long-term weight maintenance.

This engaging course includes case discussions, interactive assessments, and access to curated resources, equipping practitioners to tackle obesity with confidence and compassion.

  1. Assess the prevalence of obesity in the female population in Australia, as well as the negative impact on the health and wellbeing of patients.
  2. Apply best practice principles in formulating a management plan with the obese patient which includes lifestyle measures and potential medical and surgical approaches.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Dr Sharon Sykes

This course is presented by Dr Sharon Sykes.

Dr Sykes works in private general practice in Port Macquarie, Australia where she is also a supervisor of GP registrars and of medical students. Dr Sykes served 18 years in the Royal Australian Air Force before becoming a general practitioner. She has a special interest in medical education and haspreviously worked as a medical educator for North Coast GP Training. Dr Sykes holds a MBBS, Bachelor of Applied Science (Med Lab Sci) and a Fellowship of the RACGP.
